The Why - Tubeless Wheelsets

September 10, 2017

I’ve got a confession to make, I’m actually a mountain biker at heart. I started in mountain biking and got converted to the dark side, or was it I saw the light. Either way, one thing I've been really excited about is seeing great tech that was born and refined in mountain biking finally deliver the goods in road cycling.

What am I on about? Tubeless tyres.

I still remember when tubeless came to mountain biking with the promise of better traction and lower rolling weight, however, what sold me over was reduced flats. At the time I was living in South Africa and by gosh, they have some seriously big sharp tyre destroying thorns and rocks. Getting a flat was as inevitable as taxes and moving to tubeless tyres was the equivalent of the Cayman Islands, a flat free haven.

Fast forward +10 years and finally, good road tubeless tyres have come on board. It’s been a long waiting game, initially, they were heavy, had terrible grip and felt sluggish. Now they can be very lightweight, provide excellent grip and boast the lowest rolling resistance of any tyre.

Ironically, it wasn’t the promise of reduced flats that won me over like it did in mountain biking. I caved in from a pure performance view, I wanted the lower rolling resistance, the potential to realize lighter rotating mass and the promise of increased comfort.

Are we there yet? It’s been a long time coming but I certainly think we’ve turned the corner and it’s only going to get better.

It’s why our 3 Series and 5 Series Carbon Wheelsets feature tubeless compatible rims. Even if you’re not ready to transition to tubeless, our rims will accommodate a standard clincher tyre, waiting for the day when you do convert to tubeless.
